Flowers for centuries have been given as gifts. Flowers have an ability to bring cheer and often given to express ones feelings, good wishes, sympathy and of course friendship and love. Over time certain flowers have had symbolic or even mystical and religious meanings attached to them.
During the Victorian era this symbolism of flowers became known as the language of flowers. An ardent lover had to be very careful about the choice of flowers he gave his sweetheart, there was no grabbing the first bunch outside a petrol station and hoping for the best. Not only could certain types of flowers express love, adoration and friendship, they could convey dislike, reproach and anger. Various colours of the same flower could have entirely different meanings and even the way they were presented was significant. Below are some of our favourite flower gifts and a short list of some of the more common flowers and their meanings.
